Specifications: This group of 6 Akan/Ashanti (Ashante) gold weight figures is not pre-1900s - they were part of an African art collection from the 1970s. So although we do not know their exact age, they are at least 50+ years old. The figures are cast from brass in the traditional lost wax process. The largest pendant is approximately 4.25" x 3", and the smallest is 2.75" x 1.25". Included are a chest pendant, 2 snakes, an aardvark, a zoomorphic winged figure and a bird ring. Doug Deal Factoid - These gold weight figures come from the Akan region of West Africa (across Ghana and the Ivory Coast). This area contained substantial gold deposits which led to the region being known as the ‘Gold Coast’ by early European traders. Made from imported European brass, the weights represented "units" and could be adjusted with drops of solder or copper. They were used to measure gold-dust, the currency of the region at that time.
