Notes: Doug Deal Factoid! Dutch traders were the first Europeans to bring Venetian chevron beads - also known as "rosetta" or "star" beads - to West Africa in the late 1400's. The beads were held in high regard by several tribes, were used as a form of currency, and were worn to show the wealth and prestige of their wearer. No manuals, cords/cables, or additional items are included if not listed or shown.
Included:
- (1) 32" Strand of Antique Venetian/African Chevron Star 5-Layer Trade Beads
Specifications: This is a full strand of antique Venetian chevron beads. All of the beads are composed of five consecutive layers of colored glass and are originally from 17th/18th century Venice, Italy (exact age is unknown). The majority of Venetian chevron beads made during this period were exported to West Africa or the Americas and typically had layers in red, white and blue glass. These beads also have green glass making them a little more rare.
There are 46 beads total, all approximately 0.85" (21mm) in diameter and range in length from 0.5" to 0.75" (19mm). They are strung on raffia cord (which is not antique), and the total strand length is 32". Total weight is 1-1/4 lbs.
