Specifications:
This lot of 5 Solid Powder Glass African Trade Beads is from the late 19th - early 20th century. The beads were originally part of a private African art collection that was acquired in the 1960s & 1970s. The largest round bead is 1" (26mm) in diameter and 16.5mm thick. The largest cylindrical bead is just over 0.785" (20mm) in diameter and 1" (26mm). The U.S. quarter is for size reference.
Doug Deal Factoid - These beads are made from powdered glass, which comes from finely ground glass commonly made out of recycled bottles or other scrap glasses. The beads are made in vertical molds; each mold is filled with ground glass which is layered to create the different colorful designs. The beads are still revered by West African cultures and collectors worldwide.
