Specifications:

This set of six (6) hand-carved African Akuaba fertility figures range in height from 9" to 13.5" and all of them can stand unaided as shown in the photos. Four have some beadwork added, three have a worn “Made in Ghana” sticker on the backside (closeup shown in the last photo), so their country of origin is no mystery. These Akuaba figures came from an unclaimed storage unit that contained antiques & other items from several countries spanning from approximately 1940s to 1980s. Our resident African artifact specialist dates them in the 1970s-80s range. Because of the addition of the beads and the stickers on the back, they were made for the collector market and were not used in any actual ceremonies.

Doug Deal Factoid: These Ashanti Akuaba or Akua'ba figures are among one of the most recognizable forms of traditional African art. Akuaba are used in a variety of contexts; primarily, however, they are carried on the backs of women hoping to conceive a child (hence their flat shape). They are not intended to resemble children, rather they depict an abstract female form in her prime. The figures are always female, but are created by male carvers. The ringed necks are meant to represent rolls of fat (a sign that a young woman is capable of bearing healthy children). Due to their unique looks and small size, Akuaba figures have become popular collectibles in the Western world.
