Model: Ngady a'Mwaash

Condition: Used. The mask shows the signs of its age and travels. The paint and kaolin have a few chips and wear in a few places, mainly the forehead (see closeup photos). However, the mask is in overall good condition for its era, with no cracks, breaks or major chips in the wood. The original beadwork and raffia cloth/cowrie shell headdress are intact. No broken shells or tears in the cloth. The photos show the actual mask and display stand the winning bidder will receive. No additional items are included. The photos show the exact item(s) the buyer will receive.

Notes: No manuals, cords/cables, or additional items are included if not listed or shown.

Included:

  • Vintage Kuba/Bakuba Tribal Mask
  • Custom Wrought Iron Display Stand

Specifications:

This is an older royal "Ngady a'Mwaash" female mask from the Kuba tribe (formerly Bakuba tribe) on a custom-made metal stand. The stand was made specifically for this mask in the 1990's, however the mask itself is older.

Artifact history: the mask was collected in Leopoldville, Congo during WWII (DRC, Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire). It was brought back to the UK after the war and was part of a private collection until the mid 1990's, then it was acquired through an estate sale and held in a private collection in the U.S. until present day. We can not determine the exact age, but it is definitely 1940's - although it could likely be older. It is of museum quality and will make a great addition to any serious African art collection. The mask on the display stand is approximately 18-inches tall and the stand is 6.5-inches in diameter. The face (wood part) of the mask is 6-inches wide x 9-inches tall (12.5-inches tall including the headdress).
